Jewellery is called gold plated when a layer of gold has been deposited onto the surface of another metal. Surgical steel is a stainless steel with the 316L designation. Just like any other steel, this steel contains nickel. However, the nickel release rate for 316L surgical stainless steel is well below the allowable value given in the EU nickel directive, which makes it hypoallergenic and well suited to use in piercing studs and fashion earrings.
